artworks today can be nearly anything claimed as such or categorized under the name of art.
if one applies such a standard to viewing artworks, any artistic classification represents merely a possibility, a perspective or approach. it is not definite and carries no authority.
the work can be the physical object itself, but it can also be the process by which the object is created, or even the concept of a particular work can be considered an artwork.
too vague definitions render the work incapable of explaining itself, making it often difficult to identify what is or is not a work. at times, people find it hard to distinguish a contemporary art piece from madness, savagery, violence, trash, or amusement parks. however, even for seemingly questionable works, people can always find some concept to justify or defend it, theories by foucault and lacan can vindicate madness and chaos.
