“i find it astonishing that the only thing in the universe that knows the universe exists is a clump of cells weighing less than 1.4 kilograms floating in our heads. this reminds me of an ancient question: if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? similarly, we can ask: if the universe appeared and disappeared and no brain knew about it, did the universe really exist? who knows? the billions of cells existing in your skull not only know about the existence of the universe, but also know it is vast and ancient. these cells have mastered a “world model” that, as far as we know, does not exist anywhere else.”
